Dentures
Although losing teeth is not a natural part of ageing and can be prevented through implementing an effective ongoing oral care routine, for people who have lost teeth through an accident or gum disease, the use of dentures still remains one of the most popular options for replacing their missing teeth.
A complete denture replaces an entire upper or lower arch or both, while a partial denture replaces only a few missing teeth and prevents the remaining teeth from moving out of alignment.
Dentures are most commonly made from acrylic or acrylic with a metal support for additional strength. With the development of new materials and technology, dentures of today fit more comfortably and have a more natural appearance than their predecessors.
Complete dentures can be either conventional, meaning the denture is placed approximately a month after all the remaining teeth are removed to allow for adequate healing time of your gum tissue or immediate, placed as soon as the teeth are removed. The disadvantage with an immediate denture is they may require more adjustments after healing has taken place.
It is preferred if possible to retain some of your natural teeth and place a partial denture, as this is more beneficial for your oral health. Partial dentures are secured to your natural teeth through the use of a metal clasp.
When you are missing teeth and tooth roots your gum contour will continue to change, therefore your dentures will need to be relined so they remain comfortable and fit securely. The team from Refresh Dental are highly experienced in denture adjustments.
