Splints and night guards
Many people wake with headaches, neck, shoulder and back pain, which may be the result of alignment problems with your teeth and jaw. Grinding and clenching of teeth is called bruxism that can cause cracking and chipping of your tooth enamel leading to uneven wear of your tooth surface.
It is a subconscious condition that you may not even be aware of as it mostly occurs during sleep where your bite force can be up to six times greater than when you are awake, as you have no muscle control.
During your regular oral examinations, one of our team members can check for excess and uneven tooth wear, which may indicate bruxism or tooth misalignment.
A custom-fitted night guard or bite splint made by Refresh Dental from high quality acrylic is worn to absorb the force and protect your teeth from further damage, it can also relieve the soreness in your jaw joins and chewing muscles caused through continual strain whilst sleeping.
The cause of bruxism is sometimes attributed to stress; often through relaxation techniques, the severity of the condition can be substantially reduced.
