Veneers

tooth veneerChanging and enhancing your smile is easily achieved with the application of porcelain veneers. A more conservative restorative option than a full crown, veneers are an ideal choice for many people wanting to close gaps, straighten crooked teeth, repair chips and cover permanently stains.

Shaped from very thin pieces of porcelain, veneers, when bonded to the surface of your teeth, become strong and durable. Fitting a crown requires reshaping your tooth, where as with a veneer, only a minor amount of enamel is needed to be removed so when secured they are the same size as your natural teeth that did not receive a veneer.

During your initial consultation we will assess your personal needs, examine the health of your teeth and gums and discuss the desired result you wish to achieve and if you would like a lighter colour shade.

As with all restorative procedures, careful preparation of your teeth is required. The surface of the teeth receiving veneers are lightly buffed removing a small amount of enamel, this allows for a strong bond to be achieved. An impression mould of your prepared teeth is and used as a template to create your porcelain veneers, ensuring a perfect fit and alignment with your gum-line, creating a very natural looking smile.

The amount of enamel we remove will depend on the requirements of each individual tooth and the thickness of the replacement veneer; often between 0.5 – 1.0mm. Removing enamel prevents your teeth looking oversized, which would occur if we simply placed the veneer directly on top of the existing tooth. Removing enamel will not affect the strength or function of your teeth.

Before securing your new veneers, we will evaluate how each one fits to your tooth and gum-line and make any minor adjustments that may be required.

An acidic gel is swabbed on your tooth to create a slightly roughened surface ensuring an even stronger bond, your veneer is then seated in place and secured with dental cement. They will be adjusted for comfort and fit with your surrounding and opposing teeth, before being polished to a natural lustre.

A follow-up appointment approximately two weeks after receiving your veneers may be required to evaluate there is no gum irritation and you have normal function.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is just as important for the longevity of your new veneers as it is for your natural teeth. Although veneers are porcelain, they are still bonded to your natural teeth, which are still susceptible to decay and gum disease.
